Despicable Me!
This week we are going to draw some Minions from the move, Despicable Me. At first, I thought I'd just have the Division One kids draw the Minions, but when I looked through their suggestion basket with things they were interested in drawing, I found that so many kids wanted to learn to draw a Minion, so the whole school will do this lesson in TED!
If you'd like to draw a Minion, here are the steps:
After we draw our Minions, we are going to make them doing something that reflects our own Minion personality. Since I am a huge Disney fan, of course I chose to make my Minion with a Mickey Mouse suit!

Scaredy Squirrel
So many of our students love Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt. We decided to do a tribute to Scaredy Squirrel in our TED class last week. The students were taught to draw Scaredy in "Melanie Watt" style and then added their own details to make him their own.

May the force be with you!
My first week of TED was amazing! Teaching around 75 kids at once sometimes and absolutely no behaviour problems because the students were so engaged! Let's hope this week is just as exciting!
This week, we are working on drawing characters who display Stephen Covey's Habit #2 - Begin with the end in mind. The Div. 2 students are drawing Yoda. Yoda begins with the end in mind because he is a Jedi Master who uses past experiences to shape future decisions. Here are the steps to draw Yoda:
To make Yoda a little more interesting for some of the girls, I designed a Yoda that used what I like to call a "doodle fill". I paint it first with watercolours and then I use a Sharpie to add all kinds of doodles. This is how he turned out:

TED - Today Everyone Draws!
TED - Today Everyone Draws!
I am so excited to be teaching a new program I developed called TED - Today Everyone Draws! Each week, students in two schools in our district will have a drawing lesson and learn how to break down drawing into easy steps using lines and shapes. Since I've always been on a mission to teach people to draw, now I get the chance to influence over 800 children!
If you are interested in doing TED with your students, here is the first drawing we will be doing...of course! It's TED the Bear, our official mascot for the program.

Hello Ontario!
I will be presenting a full day art session at the EDIFIDE Summer Institute in Ancaster, Ontario on July 3. If you are from that area and you interested, here is the information:
READ AND DRAW – JK-3
During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to represent characters from favourite children’s
storybooks. Combining objectives from language arts and fine arts, they will have a chance to create unique works of art using the following media:
• wax crayons
• watercolour paint
• pastels
• collage
Participants will learn simple drawing techniques to guide students to create their own representations of storybook characters. At the end of the class, they will leave with four to five completed projects plus ideas to create their own language arts-integrated art unit for students. Each participant will receive a copy of the book, Tamara Martin Spady the Art Lady - Make It Your Own.
